A valid passport is required for entering and exiting the United State, so when you need to get a new passport, or renew your current one, do you know where to go for passport photos? - While you only need to submit one photo with your passport application, it’s always handy to have one or two extras for future visa applications.
- Infants and children are required to have passports.
- The State Department does not require Children under the age of 16 to get new passports as long as thier change in appearance is due to the normal aging process.
- You can smile in your passport photos, but the government prefers that you have a neutral facial expression.
- If you wear eyeglasses on a daily basis, then you may wear them in your passport photo. The person taking your photos will make sure there isn’t a glare that obscures your eyes.
- Your passport photo needs to be a clear head shot, so avoid clothing that obscures your face, like scarves and hats.
- If you wear head coverings daily for religious purposes, you may wear them in in your passport photos. However, your face must still be fully visible, and your head covering cannot hide your hairline or cast shadows on your face.
- Do not wear a uniforms unless it is religious attire you wear daily.
- If your appearance has changed significantly since your current passport photos were taken, you will need to get new photos. Significant changes include:
- Undergoing significant facial surgery or trauma
- Adding or removing numerous/large facial piercings or tattoos
- Losing or gaining a significant amount of weight
- Making a gender transition
- In general, you are not allowed to digitally enhance or alter the photo to change your appearance in any way, so if you don't like your passport photos, you'll need to take new ones.
